Falls in seniors in Belgium: a major public health issue
Falls in seniors are the leading cause of domestic accidents in Belgium's 65+ population. One third of seniors fall annually, rising to 50% for those over 80. Annual cost exceeds €800 million. INAMI has made fall prevention a national priority with structured screening programmes.

Home modifications to prevent falls
Home modifications are the first prevention lever: grab bars in bathrooms, non-slip mats, automatic night lights, secured carpets, stairway handrails and anti-slip strips. Occupational therapists assess homes with costs partially covered by mutual funds.

Physical activity and balance exercises for seniors
Regular physical activity reduces fall risk by 40%. Tai-chi, daily walking, gentle group gym and preventive physiotherapy are most effective. Simple home exercises include chair stands, heel-to-toe walking and one-leg balance. See our seniors activities guide.

Medical monitoring and technical aids
Regular medical follow-up identifies fall risk factors: medication reviews, annual eye and hearing checks, walking aids, anti-slip shoes, teleassistance and vitamin D supplementation. See our senior home care guide and night care for seniors.
